rainbows: a dime a dozen

Wow, yesterday in Wellington rainbows were literally around every corner. I'm talking full, vibrant arches. On my drive home I came as close as is scientifically possible to driving through one arch in Lowry Bay and then I turned the corner into Mahina Bay and deja vous.

I'm not sure how many I saw, but I'm estimating around ten.

Seriously.

Stefanie and I decided to rechristen Wellington "the city of rainbows" instead of "the windy city" with all its negative undertones.

As if that wasn't enough natural excitement for one day, in the morning we took the dogs for a walk in the neighborhood along the Eastbourne foreshore and what do you think we saw?

A fur seal pup.

In the neighborhood.

Seriously.

Berkley spotted (or more likely smelled) the little fellow first as he napped on a rock. He went right up to him and sniffed his bum and then Kai caught on and followed suit. Kai then quickly came to my side looking up at me as if to ask, "is everything okay?"

The seal tried his best to act tough and gave out a few less than frightening barks and inched his way into the bitter cold water. Poor thing. Berkley followed him up to his ankles, but he is no swimmer (fortunately in this case) so he just watched longingly as the seal turned and gave one last "ha ha ha" taunting bark.

I was a bit nervous but relieved it was just a pup because fur seals are very territorial and can be fierce. I later found out the mother was hanging out on that beach two weeks ago. Also I was kind of proud that the dogs didn't bark or anything, they were just intrigued.

I still can't get over the fact that our little wuss puppy, Berkley, who is scared of wet pine cones and electrical cords, had the nerve to mix it up with a seal. And chase him out to sea to boot. What a tough guy.
